天才科学者のリックが、娘家族の家に引っ越してきて間もない頃から物語は始まる。
リックはパラレルワールド間の移動や超光速航行など驚異的なハイテク技術を有し、孫のモーティやサマーを連れて危険な冒険に出ては様々なトラブルを引き起こすか、あるいは巻き込まれ、時には宇宙一のゲームセンターやリゾート施設で遊興にふける。
第1話を除いて、各エピソードにはクレジットシーンの後におまけシーンがついている。
基本的にコメディ作品ではある一方、宇宙的ホラーの要素もある。
